Feed the Dolphins

Check one off the Bucket List – Feed the Dolphins. Okay, actually it was “get close enough to touch a dolphin” but I got to do that too. It was part of the whole dolphin-feeding experience at SeaWorld Orlando.

But I’m only checking it off, not crossing it off – because I plan on doing it again and again. In fact, if the people at SeaWorld would let me, I think I could spend every day doing it. But I think they might need to let other people get a chance to do it too. And I think my family might miss me.

Feeding the Dolphins at SeaWorld

That is me in the red shirt and pony tail feeding the dolphins at SeaWorld

Ever since I was a kid watching Flipper save the day in re-runs, I’ve had a fascination with dolphins. But they’re kind of thin on the ground in Colorado where I’ve spent most of my life… so it was just kind of a “somewhere, someday” sort of desire.

Over the years, I’ve daydreamed about doing one of those “swim with dolphins” excursions that seem to be part of every Caribbean cruise. But spending a fortune just for that seems a bit outrageous for a parent’s budget. Someone should’ve told me sooner that I could just go to SeaWorld instead.

Who knew that doing so would find me standing next to dozens of equally enchanted strangers to have the experience of a lifetime? That I would willingly stick my hand in a container of stinky, dead fish and gleefully hold them out to a smiling, playful dolphin and giggle like a little girl when she took it? But I did. And it was so amazing that I won’t be letting my own little girl wait until she’s 42 to experience it for herself. I’ll be taking her soon and I suspect, often.

Next up? Discovery Cove. Who needs to pay for a cruise when we can swim with dolphins in beautiful, sunny Orlando?

This has always looked like fun. Of the many experiences here in Orlando, Discovery Cove looks like one that I wouldn’t ever forget.

I had a blast feeding the dolphins with you Lucretia! I never knew how fun that could be. The dolphins are so friendly.

@Ted Murphy: It looks like they really like the attention, like a group of bubbly puppies.

I watched Flipper first runs. Ouch.

Sounds like a wonderful experience. I hope to be able to feed the dolphins someday as well.

@Ted Murphy: I had so much fun (as you can probably tell!!) Thank you again!!

@Genuine: Surely not! ;) I think I was 2 when they stopped the first-runs, but that still makes me too old when I first had this experience!

@Adam Fortuna: I actually asked them if I could just stay there and do that all day, the answer was sadly no, or I would’ve!

@BenSpark: I can’t wait to do it again!! Next time, with my daughter by my side! Hope it’s soon for you too!

Hi, you have wonderful dolphin photos here. I simply love them, not only the dolphins, but the fine photography also.

I just love dolphins as they are so much friendly and better than humans in many ways. Their are the only living thing on this planet apart from man who is so giving without expecting anything in return.
I just pray they never go extent.

I would love to feed the dolphins – how fun would that be?!

You’ve got a great blog – fun to read. :) And I know what you mean about Colorado – I live just south of Denver and don’t think we’ll be seeing dolphins anytime soon. ;)

    Take care,
    Katherine

SeaWorld will always be my favorite Florida attraction, and I am a 2nd generation Floridian raised in Orlando. We went to Discovery Cove its first year open after enduring an 8 month waiting list. I will never forget that experience and plan to take every child I can to spend a day there. Swim with beautiful tropical fish, wade with the rays, walk among tropical birds, even swim with a dolphin if you want. No “stormy seas” disappointments in their waters, every day is a good day to snorkle and swim.

I was blessed, My Husband took me to the Bahamas, 07/07/08 for my Birthday. I was able to hug, kiss and touch a Dolphin ( mine was TONI ) and I will never forget what she ( and my Husband ) did for me. This had been a Dream all MY LIFE.. I was getting ready for a total knee replacement. I have always loved Dolphins, all my life. They are amazing, the way they survive in the wild. I did not know they played with bubbles, but would believe it. Thank You, and keep me up on any news about them. Have a great day, I know I will now that My Husband, shared this sight with me… xox

it is my first post on this blog and firstly I would like to thank for the unique information, which I found in this and all previous posts , it really helped me a lot. I will definitely iclude this website on my google reader :) Also, I would like to ask – don’t you mind if I will quate some information from your blog because I am writing articles for the Helium, Ezine and other articles directories (this is my part time job)? It would really help me with some of mine articles. Of course, I will mention your blog name or URL (not all articles directories allows URL’s , so I can’t 100% promise that you will get a direct link to your website).
